CJ Griffin Quoted in Montclair Local Discussing Police Accountability in New Jersey 

CJ Griffin, partner and director of the Justice Gary S. Stein Public Interest Center at Pashman Stein Walder Hayden P.C., was quoted in the Montclair Local article “Montclair Police Officer was suspended for 20 Days after ‘China 19 Check’ Comment.” The article discusses Bills S371/A996, which would expand the types of law enforcement records that could be released under New Jersey’s Open Public Record Act.  The article further discusses how the information provided by the Attorney General’s office regarding police disciplinary measures, based on data reported to it by local police, does not capture all disciplinary actions and when it does, often provides too little details.

“The ongoing problem is still that there’s really no oversight by the Attorney General’s Office in how much these agencies are disclosing,” attorney CJ Griffin, a proponent of government transparency and advocate for public access to police misconduct records, told New Jersey Monitor. “Some of these agencies just write ‘violation of rules and regulations,’ which tells us nothing. It’s essentially not complying with the policy.”
